Mythology Mythology

Skopelos was inhabited initially from Minoan Crete, ruled by King Stafylo, whose grave was discovered in 1927 in the locality of Stafylos. The Cretans imported the cultivation of vines and olives to the island.

According to mythology in the 13th century BC, the semi mythical Thessalian king of Iolkou, Pelias, who usurped the power of his brother Jason, turned away the Cretans and extended his sovereignty on the island. Pelias compelled his nephew, Jason who had arrived wearing one sandal to claim the throne, to organise the Argonauts expedition and bring him the Golden Fleece from Kolhida, then he would allow him to rule.

The Stafylos is found in the southeastern part of Skopelos and is 4 km from the capital of island. It is a small rounded peninsula named Island that is said to be linked to the main island by a ‘neck’. The beaches of Velanio and Stafylos are on each side of the ‘neck’. On this tract of land the Mycenaean grave with offerings was discovered. It is believed that Peparithos was a Minoan colony in the region of Stafylos as the area was suitable for settlement. The first settler was Stafylos from Crete. According to legend he was the son of Dionysus and Ariadni, the daughter of King Minos. The grave is named The Grave of Stafylou.
