Hora, Skopelos Hora, Skopelos

Hora and its harbour are located on the east coast of the island. The town is amphitheatrically built, with closely cobbled alleys full flowers in pots, houses of rural architecture with the old wooden hanging balconies, bridges that communicate one house with another, whitewashed lanes, even newer buildings have been built to reflect the rural architecture. In one of these old houses is the where the poet Pavlos Nirvanas was born and spent his childhood.

There are 360 churches and chapels on Skopelos with 123 of them located in Hora. The churches of Evagelismou, Panaetsa and Agios Nikolaos are built on an abrupt rock. In north of Hora are the ruins of the Venetian Castle that was built in the 13th century, as well as the church of Agios Athanassios that built in the 9th century. The Folklore Museum and the Photographic Centre are located in the town as well as many traditional folk art shops offering handmade ceramics, clothes, jewellery and gifts as well as the services of Banks, Medical Centre of, Pharmacy, Post Office etc.

The characteristic kind hospitable nature of the residents will befriend you. There are many restaurants, tavernas, cafeterias and bars for evening entertainment catering for all tastes.

Glossa Glossa

Glossa is located on the north western coast of the island and is built on a hill above the harbour of Loutraki, 25 km from Hora. The town has picturesque alleys with houses reflecting the local architecture. Glossa was inhabited in ancient times in prehistoric Selinoundas. Here there is a rare breed of sheep, the Souls of Skopelos, famed for the quality of its wool. The area is rich in olives, plums and vines. Fresh fish and seafood is available from the tavernas in Loutraki. In the courtyard of the monastery of Agois Taxiarhi are the buildings of an early Christian chapel and the chapel of Agios Ioannis above in the rock as well as the ancient Roman baths.

Neo Klima, Elios Neo Klima, Elios

Elios is a new village, near in Old Klima, built in the greenest region of Skopelos where the forest reaches down to the sea. A new village established in 1980 with the residents old Klima, who progressively abandoned their old village and began to install themselves in the area of the magical, pine beach of Elios. The rich forest, the enormous beaches, the small picturesque harbour and newly built houses are elements of the new identity of the village of New Klima (Elios). The beach varies from sandy to pebble with crystal clear waters and the adjoining Hovolo beach where the sea takes the strangest nuances with the fine golden sand. There are the ancient graves of Sentoukia. The Byzantine chapel of Agios Ioannis is built on an enormous rock in the sea and the approach requires the climb of 107 steps. Old Klima is located 3 km away.

Old Klima Old Klima

Old Klima is located in the north-west of the island between Elios and Glossa and 24 km from Hora. It is a verdant village, built amphitheatrically, with old stone houses that overlook the Aegean Sea. There is the Magdalini traditional bakery producing aromatic traditional bread. Klima is made up of two small settlements, Ano Klima and Lower Klima or Mahalas. The nearest beach is Elios. Most of the residents of Klima moved to the village of Elios. Most of the houses have been bought by foreigners and Greeks for use as rural residences.

Loutraki Loutraki

Loutraki is the second harbour of island and is 35 km from Hora and 2 km from Glossa. At the entrance to the harbour are the small islets of Round, Rusk, Glaronisi and Dasia, which protect the harbour and offer a haven during winds and storms. The settlement unfolds around the harbour, to the west and above on a hill are the ruins of the citadel of ancient Selinountas dated to the 4th century BC. Close by are the ruins of the temple of Athina that dates to the 5th century BC. There are tavernas serving fresh fish and seafood. The settlement has accommodation for visitors and a marina for small boats.

Panormos Panormos

Panormos is 18 km from Hora. In Panormo there was a fortified citadel above in the hill, known as Palaiokastro, its walls remain in excellent condition. There is evidence of other ancient buildings in the locality. A picturesque path leads from the Acropolis to the Panos Cavern, a unique monument of divine adoration of Skopelos.

Agnondas Agnondas

Agnondas is a coastal settlement of astonishing beauty, which is used as a second harbour during bad weather. It is named after the ancient Olympic champion Agnonta when he returned victorious from Olympia in 569 BC and landed here. In the region of Agnonta, as in Stafylo and Panormo were the workshops for the manufacture of amphoras for the eminent Peparitho wine with which they traded during the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
