The customs of the island
The first day of the year, besides the customs of the jingle bells that we can find all over Greece, the residents of Thassos celebrate the “burn of the leaves”. According to the tradition, the local people sit around the fireplace and throw olive leaves in the coals while at the same time they are thinking a wish. With the fire the leaves intend to close shaping a circle. They say that your wish will come true if you have the leave that shaped the better circle.
Another custom is the “rubbing of the pepper”, that they celebrate during the carnival’s days as follows: the chief is singing once and the rest are dancing and repeating the song doing at the same time the movements based on what the chief is saying. Whoever disobeys has to be punished by the chief.
Another well-known custom that is taking place in the village Limenaria is “Rain my April”. The second day of the Easter, the residents of the island are gathering and they please to God to rain so that their vines won’t suffer from the drought. During this custom you can try some local food, traditional sweets and plenty of wine of Thassos.
