Polignotos Bagis
Polignotos Bagis was born in Potamis of Thasos in 14 of January of 1894. In the age of 17 leaves Thasos, that at those times was under the Turkish occupation, and goes to New York. There he tries really hard to get into a school of arts and in the end he was accepted in “Cooper Union Institution” of New York, where studies sculpture for 6 years.
Later on, in 1919, was accepted in “BEAUX-ARTS INSTITUTE” of New York, where studies sculpture for three years, with some of the most important teachers such as C.BOULGON and F.AITKEN. In 1920 participates for the first time in exhibitions of sculpture of “NATIONAL ACADEMY OF DESIGN” and in 1922 came his first success: the sculpture “My Grandfather” is one of the best exhibits of his collection.
In 1925 Bagis became famous all over the world, when the NATIONAL ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY includes his personal dados in the publication that was publish in 1928. Until the end of his life, he participated in more than 40 exhibitions that took place in the better museums of contemporary art in United States.
In 1952 gains the first price in the festival in Long Island for the sculpture “The sleep”. His works were inspired from the Greek nature, for example fishes, different types of birds and animals, moon etc.
He died in the 15th of March of 1965 in the hospital of the Veterans of New York.
His works are located in many museums, especially in USA, such as in the museum of Brooklyn, in the museum WHITNEY of New York, in the museum of art in Toledo of Ohaio, in the museum of Tel Aviv in Israel and in the public museum of Kavala.
