Welcome to the island of Milos

Population
About 5,000 residents (4.744 people according to the census of 2001).

Position
Milos is the fifth largest island in the Cyclades (24 islands in Cyclades total) located on the southwestern edge. It lies 86 miles (138.40 km) from Piraeus and is in the middle of the route Piraeus - Crete. The geographic width 36° 46’ 27’’ to 36° 38’ 37’’ and the geographic length of
2° 19’ 01’’ to 24° 32 47’’.

The shape of the island is irregular and looks like a horseshoe. Its length from north to south is up to 11.2 km and from east to west to 17.6 km. It narrows in the center and the sea penetrates deep into the land creating the port of Milos, one of the largest and safest natural Mediterranean ports.

Morphology: The island is relatively mountainous, without arboreal vegetation and low mountain height not exceeding 400 meters.

Climate
The island's climate is mild Mediterranean with plenty of sunshine most days of the year. From mid July to mid-August there are often winds blowing (northerly periodic winds), while southerly winds are usually neither frequent nor strong.

Administration
Milos establishes a municipality, the Municipality of Milos and its capital Plaka. It belongs to the prefecture of Cyclades with its capital Ermoupolis in the island of Syros.

Sectors
In the past, Milos had developed enough agricultural production. Today the most important position is the secondary sector with the extraction of industrial materials, while the tertiary sector and in particular the tourist industry is developing rapidly.

Length of coastline: 125 km

Highest peak: Prophet Elias - 751 meters.
