Information About Ilia Museums
The archeological museum of Olympia is one of the most important museums in Greece. Its collection includes findings from the Temple of Olympiou Dios, Prehistoric, Archaic and Classical mainly bronze pieces as well as sculpture collections from the archaic up to the Roman period.The most important exhibit of all though is the decorative sculpture from the Dios Temple. The east pediment depicts the harness race between Pelopas and Oinomaos with Zeus in the centre , while the west pediment shows the kidnapping of a woman by the Centaurs with Apollo in the centre.
This museum exhibits pieces mainly from the sacred temple of Dios in Olympia. The most important ones are gold seal-rings depicting the Olympic Games, bronze and terracotta geometric warrior and chariot idols from Olympia symbolizing the harness racing, objects used by the athletes or related to the Games. Also important are the inscriptions on the bases of the statues of athletes, the stone and bronze signs, the bronze statuettes of athletes as well as the pottery with drawings of the athletes during the Games.
It exhibits almost 4000 artifacts from the socioeconomic life of the mountainous area of Olympia, such as tools and objects used for old crafts as well as manuscripts and war heirlooms from the Greek revolutionaries and the first victorious battle that took place on 27th March 1821 in the narrows of Agios Athanassios.
