About Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of Macedonia, a vibrant, youthful port on the Thermaic Gulf with more than two thousand years of history and a reputation as the country's food capital. Its long seafront promenade runs from the White Tower, the city's symbol, past the famous Umbrellas sculpture to the modern Nea Paralia, and is perfect for evening walks with views of Mount Olympus across the bay. Founded in 315 BC, the city was one of the great centres of the Roman and Byzantine worlds: the Rotunda, the Arch of Galerius and the remains of the imperial palace stand in the city centre, and its Early Christian and Byzantine monuments, such as the churches of Agios Dimitrios and Agia Sofia, form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Above the centre, Ano Poli, the old upper town, has narrow lanes, wooden houses and Byzantine walls with views over the whole city. Thessaloniki is also a city of markets, cafés and nightlife: Modiano and Kapani markets, the bars of Ladadika and the famous bougatsa pastries for breakfast are part of daily life, and its museums and film festival are among the best in Greece. With an international airport, it is also the gateway to Chalkidiki. Thessaloniki suits city-breakers, food lovers and culture lovers all year.

Getting to & around Thessaloniki

plane

By air

Thessaloniki International Airport (Makedonia), with flights from across Europe and from Athens all year, is the gateway to northern Greece. Central Thessaloniki is about 25 minutes away by taxi or transfer.

ferry

By ferry

Thessaloniki’s port has no regular year-round island ferries, though seasonal boats to the Sporades have run in some summers. For islands, Kavala and Keramoti, about two hours east, serve Thasos, and Volos, about two and a half hours south, serves Skiathos and Skopelos.

Getting around

Not needed in Thessaloniki, where the new metro, buses and walking along the waterfront cover the centre, and parking is difficult. A car is useful for day trips to Halkidiki, Mount Olympus, Vergina, Edessa and the coast of the Strymonian Gulf.
