By air
Kavala International Airport (Alexander the Great), near Chrysoupoli, has summer flights from Europe and flights from Athens. Thessaloniki airport, with more international flights, is about one and three-quarter hours away by motorway. Kavala is about 30 minutes away by taxi or transfer.
By ferry
Kavala’s port has ferries to Prinos on Thasos, about an hour and a quarter, and some ferries to Limnos and other North Aegean islands. For the shorter crossing to Thasos, Keramoti is about 45 minutes east by road.
Getting around
Not needed in the city: the old town of Panagia, the harbour and the centre are walkable, and city buses run along the coast. A car is useful for Ancient Philippi, Amphipolis, the beaches west of the city and the drive to Keramoti for Thasos.
