Tilos is a small, peaceful island between Rhodes and Kos, known as one of the greenest and most environmentally minded islands in Greece. Hunting has been banned here for decades, and much of the island is a protected nature area where rare birds such as Eleonora's falcons and Bonelli's eagles nest on the cliffs, making Tilos a favourite with birdwatchers and walkers. A network of old footpaths links beaches, chapels and abandoned settlements. Ferries arrive at Livadia, a relaxed harbour village with a long pebble beach, small hotels and tavernas, where most visitors stay. Inland, Megalo Chorio, the main village, climbs a hillside below the ruins of a Venetian castle built on the site of an ancient acropolis. The island also has an extraordinary prehistoric past: in the cave of Charkadio, the bones of dwarf elephants that lived here until a few thousand years ago were discovered. The abandoned village of Mikro Chorio, with its ruined stone houses and a summer bar, is an atmospheric stop. Beaches such as Eristos, a long sandy bay, Agios Antonios and Plaka are quiet and uncrowded. Tilos suits walkers, nature lovers and travellers looking for calm and simplicity.

Transportation
Port of Livadia (Tilos)
By air
Tilos has no airport. The usual route is to fly to Rhodes, with many summer flights from Europe, and take a ferry or catamaran, about one and a half to two and a half hours. Kos airport is another option, with ferries along the Dodecanese line.
By ferry
Livadia is the port, with ferries and catamarans a few times a week to Rhodes, Symi, Nisyros, Kos and Kalymnos, and ferries to Piraeus. Connections are fewer than on the bigger islands, so plan around the schedules.
Getting around
Not essential. A local bus links Livadia with Megalo Chorio and Eristos beach, and Tilos is a renowned walking island. A scooter or small car is handy for reaching remote beaches and the abandoned village of Mikro Chorio.
