Agios Kirikos Agios Kirikos

Agios Kirikos, the capital of the Island, lies to the south of the island and welcomes visitors with its impressive neoclassical two storey high Captain Houses. In the surrounding villages one finds many churches with elaborate steeples, people keeping alive the traditional festivals, which are well-known through the Island’s dance and the Ikariotikos Pramneios Wine – the dark dry wine.

The houses with their blooming courtyards win the heart of every visitor, while impressive neoclassical buildings, which now house the various government departments, are evidence of the city's history.

Agios Kirikos’ center however is relatively modern. Older neighborhoods are located to the north (from Sevdalis Alley and up) and westward towards the Flebes district from around 1750. This area, as archeological findings prove, used to be occupied and was gradually abandonned, due to pirate raids.

Agios Kirikos guests can stroll along the Old Town’s cobblestone streets to see St. Nicholas Square with its wooden temple from ca. 1820/30, the High School building (neoclassical) and the church of Agios Kirikos – both designed by the Belgian architect Debre. Worth visiting are also the Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Folk-History Museum.

The heart of the city is a small chapel dedicated to St. Kirikos and his mother Julita. It was founded by sailors, who traveled to Antalya (Asia Minor), where particularly those saints were honoured. The settlement was formed in the 16th or 17th century. Near the beach on the western edge of the city there is the marble monument of the Ikarionian Hero with a fountain at its base, overlooking town.

Behind the neighborhood of the coast, the houses on the hillside and the amphitheater unfold. The pier at the harbour is dominated by Ikariada, an imposing sculpture of metal recalling the island's relationship with the myth of Icarus.

Armenistis Armenistis

A village of very few inhabitants and houses, which has evolved into an excellent tourist village, full of hotels, rooms for rent, restaurants and shops. It offers its guests many amenities and has excellent beaches. The natural surroundings will impress you.

Gialiskari Gialiskari

A coastal village situated on the northwest side of Agios Kirikos at ca. 50 km distance. Gialiskari is one of the most beautiful spots on the island.

Characterized by dense vegetation and stunning beach, which is considered one of the best on the island. Also you can reach the equally beautiful beaches Libadi and Mesachti.

Gialiskari is developing into a tourist resort on the island. In this region one will find rooms for rent that provide comfortable accommodation in a quiet and beautiful environment.

Evdilos Evdilos

Built as an amphitheater, Evdilos is on the North side of the island, 40 km North-West of Agios Kirikos.

Evdilos is built on the coast, after 1830 the end of piracy in Ikaria. Before Agios Kirikos and during the second Turkish occupation 1834-1912, Evdilos was temporary the island’s capital. The name means visible on open horizon. Today it is the second port and the center of northern, central and western Ikaria.

The villages of Arethusa, Daphne, Karavostamo of Manganitis and Frantato form the municipality of Evdilos with about 2,800 permanent residents. The picturesque small harbor and quay alongside the old mansions, narrow alleys, traditional and newly built homes make it also architecturally an interesting village, which reveals the beauty of the people and their love for the planet. From an architectural point of view Evdilos may be the most traditional settlement.

Built on a small hill with houses of all types: old, neoclassical, and modern; traditionally looked after with passion and style. The entire area, with its small cobble streets, leading into neighborhoods where homes are harmoniously linked one to the other, leaves visitors wondering about where a house ends and another starts, thus creating a feeling of warmth. Furthermore Evdilos is the ideal base for excursions to the most amazing remote areas of Ikaria.

ThermaTherma

The area of Therma has been known since ancient times for its thermal springs which each year are visited by thousands of tourists. A short distance from Therma are ruins of the ancient city Drakanos, where today one can find a preserved part of the wall of the citadel from classical times.

KarkinagriKarkinagri

One of the most remote villages in the southwestern end, near Cape Papa. Due to a lack of paved roads to the village, residents are relatively isolated. But the village has a harbour for fishing boats, so it is easy to access by boat. There are routes from the port of Agios Kirikos and Manganitis.

Faros

This village has one of the most beautiful beaches in the southern part of the island. Also in the area of Faros lies the island's airport.

Guests can find numerous taverns, cafes and bars here, making it the number one spot of the most popular destinations during the summer.

Just outside the village ruins of the ancient city Drakanos can be found, with part of the citadel still standing. It is still under ongoing excavations.

East lies the church of St. George, and the beach.

The village takes its name from the lighthouse located in the area.

Maganitis

A coastal fishing village on the south side of the island, with picturesque houses and courtyards, at the foot of the imposing granit hill Atheva. Here ends the roads coming from Evdilos and Agios Kirikos. Accessible only by footpath is a unique beach, with large white pebbles and blue waters.

Monokampi

When in Monokampi a visit is worthwhile to the church of St. Sophia. Part of it is built inside the cave were the relics can be found. The village is famous for its unique "fellodentro" (oak or cork) of Greece, whence comes the cork from.
