Local Products of Ikaria - Rose Local Products

The local products of Ikaria are based mainly on livestock, agriculture and fisheries. Most of them remain on the island, but some are exported to other regions of Greece.

Forage Products
In all parts of Ikaria you will find meat (goat, pork, beef and chicken) and cheese from the local goat milk, kathoura. The most popular meat is the one of Raska; wild goats living on the island.

Agricultural Products
Large garden production (tomatoes cabbage, cucumbers, beans, peas, peppers, etc.) that cover the majority of the islands market.

Fruits (peaches, apples, figs, chestnuts, watermelon, cantaloupe, honey, olive oil and table grapes), the Ikarias Kaisa and the red wine variety "Fokiano", also known as "Pramneio Wine".

Among the traditional products of Ikaria should be also mentioned, the famous, very old Ikaria honey and its plentiful and beautiful walnuts, which find suitable climatic conditions to grow and thrive.

Catch
The fleet of professional and amateur fishermen is a major production unit of our country. In recent years, however, the production of fish has been significantly reduced. Fishing is one of the main sources of "Fourni".

Ikaria exports many sweets. The most famous is Ikarias Rose.

Local Products of Ikaria - Honey

Ikaria visitors can visit restaurants and small taverns and taste traditional Greek dishes. In various parts of the island there are fish taverns with fresh fish, the variety of which depends on the season. The wide variety of dishes that can be savored is almost impossible be described in a few lines.

The squash and chickpea are very famous local delicacies, which are usually accompanied by the famous "pramneio wine" (local wine).

The fillings (gemista) are one of the specialties of the island. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, even potatoes are filled with rice. Their secret is the various spices. From the same material is also made the "Sufiko".

Local pies are also very famous.

Fish are usually cooked on the grill, while the local delicacies such as smoked herring and anchovy fillet grilled with onions, peppers and tomatoes are also well known.

Of course we could not forget the homemade sweets of Ikaria, like spoon sweets. And of course the local Ikarian honey.
