Welcome to the island of Ikaria

Ikaria is an island in the North Aegean Sea and belongs to the prefecture of Samos. Located 10 nautical miles (19 kilometers) northwest of Samos and 143 nautical miles from the port of Piraeus.

Morphology
Ikaria is one of the largest islands of the eastern Aegean, 255 square miles (660 square kilometers) in area with 102 miles (160 kilometers) coastline and the population is 7,000 people. The topography displays a contrasting landscape, with slopes with green vegetation and barren cliffs.

The island is mountainous in the most part. It is crossed by the Sierra Atheva (Pramnos), whose highest peak is 1,040 meters. Most of the villages are located in the valleys near the coast and only a few are in the mountains. Ikaria has a tradition of producing a strong red wine. Many parts of the island is covered with large bushes, especially ravines, which give the landscape the impression of a rich vegetation.

There are no rare species on the island. Apart from ordinary animals, only a few flocks of sheep appear, disturbing the tranquility of the island with the bells that have at their necks. The climate of Ikaria is mild.

Climate
The climate in Ikaria, because of its geographical location and the influence of the sea, is described as Mediterranean, with mild winters and long hot, dry summers, low annual rainfall and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Rarely is noted in these areas frost, hail and even more rarely snow. The average annual temperature is 18.9°C. The minimum average monthly temperature is 9°C (February), and the maximum 29.3°C (July). The prevailing winds are mainly north and northeast blowing especially during the summer and less South and Southwest observed more during the winter with tension over the 6 B. The relative humidity has an average 72.5% in winter and 47.5% in summer. The dry season lasts from April to October. The frost is 1.2 days per year, snow 1.5 and hail 3.3. The sunshine reaches 2915 hours per year with maximum 398 hours in July, one of the largest in Greece. .
